Brief description of the programme/project/Initiative :
Cloud computing is an emerging paradigm where computing resources are offered as on demand, scalable by pooling of resources over the Internet. Basically cloud offers infrastructure, platform and software as services, which provide better usage of resources , increased scalability, performance and cost effectiveness. The Kerala State Data Centers(SDC) are a crucial asset base for the development of E-Governance initiatives, considering that they serve as the information repository of the State. SDC hosts more than 150 e-Governance applications, some of which require more resources during the peak time of computation. Also utalization of of idle resources have to be pooled and used effectively. Cloud computing infrastructure allows enterprises to achieve more efficient use of IT hardware and software investments by pooling resources into large clouds. Pooling of resources would serve to bring down costs and increase utilization. The project is to develop a cloud Infrastructure for Kerala SDC and experiment its effectiveness in terms of scalability, performance and cost saving.

Why was the project started :
1.Data centers are notoriously underutilized, often idle 85% of the time, which has over provisioning , insufficient capacity planning and sizing and improper understanding of scalability requirements. Therefore, the resources are not properly utilized. 2.Certain e-Gov applications require more resources during the peak time of computation, so adding more hardware and servers is not a proper solution. 3. Energy saving and green revolution in IT is to be addressed seriously 4.Cloud is a better solution for such problems, and also which gives better performance and save power, cost and energy

Objective :
1.Develop a cloud Infrastructure for Kerala State Data Centre and experiment its effectiveness. 2. Deploy some of the crucial applications which require more want of resources during computation over a cloud and test its performance, and utilization of resources in an optimized manner.

  5. Cloud on Ubunto platform and an e-GovApplication SPARK on Windows, ASP.NET ported successfully

List the 5 key challenges faced while implementing the programme/project/initiative :

  1. Many old machines in DAta Centre couldnot use for Cloud
  2. Old machines ar not supported Virtualization
  3. Initially decided to make Existing Data Centre to cloud
  4. Due to the unavailability of minimum cores of CPU and Virtualization support, decided to do on new Data centre of Kerala State
  5. Bias upgradation is done for certain machine to enable virtualization

  1. A new computing model, that can be easily used by anybody as a service
  2. Easily replicated without much hassle
  3. Only Open sources are used, so not much cost involved
  4. A new paradigm shift, ccan start business without much upfront cost
  5. A rental, metered model, can be used as a service, just like electricity you use.

  1. The SPARK application (Payroll and Inventory Management System of Government of Kerala,
  2. started with 50,000 employees, now it beome 3 lakhs employees.
  3. By Jun2012, it will beome more than 5 lakh employees.
  4. Cloud experimentation shows the scalability to large number of users
  5. and also the number of hits in crores.
