Brief description of the programme/project/Initiative :

  1. The software provides a GUI interface with secure user login.
  2. It generates statistics and reports to support better planning.

  5. The software is accessible round the clock.
  6. The application has three level architecture, SQL base databases, Application broker and browser base user interface.

Why was the project started :
Hospitals are the key institutions in providing relief against sickness and disease. Effective computerised systems and procedures were started to automate the clinical process and patient information access at the first place. So when a hospital is computerised a doctor can know a out/in-patient’s codition or progress online based on his unique identifying number or code and give instructions online. The aim was to make the information pertaining to the patient’s previous visits, surgeries, diseases, allergies, lab reports, medication, etc., available at his fingertips for analysing and providing proper medication.

Objective :
e-Hospital is state of art information and communication technology based solution to manage the ever expanding volume of health information, and for harnessing the latest in information technology for the benefit of patients, doctors, nurses, paramedical personnel and other professionals, administrators, health care providers.

Target group : Patients, doctors, nurses, paramedical personnel and other professionals, administrators, health care providers.
Geographical reach : Citizens of Andhra Pradesh, especially those in and around Hyderabad. This is the state level tertiary care hospital specialised in tropical and communicable diseases.

  1. Use of low cost open source technologies .

  5. Even the class IV employee who didn’t even pass Xth standard can operate the system to accomplish his/her assignments, duties effortlessly and easily.
  6. Automatic generation of performance reports and disease surveillance reports.
  7. Use of ICD 10 and other standards for the first time in the Government Hospitals.
  8. Linkage to aadhaar, voter id, ration card for patient data.
  9. Designed to optimise the existing manual processes with the existing human resources.
  10. With interfaces to various stakeholders, minimising the daily routine tasks of the dept. officials.

  1. Reduction of waiting time of the patients.
  2. No manual writing of sisters – so patient care improves.
  3. Stationery – stock registers (13 books) in each ward along with indent books eliminated . Unnecessary and extra indenting and general consumables, thermometers, candles, soaps, match boxes etc., frequently can be restricted in documented online.
  4. Maintenance of medical records as per MCI norms electronically. Sending MRD reports online , Providing Reports in website.
  5. The system is operational 24x7x365 basis since its installation as hospitals run 24 hours without any holidays throughout the year.

List the 5 key challenges faced while implementing the programme/project/initiative

  1. Resistance from the users to shift from the age old manual system to using the computer in view of the transparency and exposure of the lapses done by the user.
  2. Some of them resisted to implement due to lack of computer knowledge.
  3. These problems were overcome by preparing a software for the layman in such a way that there is no need of typing . Instead of telling the user to implement the program or operating the computer they were shown how easier and strainless to use it even without having computer knowledge.
  4. Instead of training for the computer usage they were demonstrated that only clicking will do the job rather than typing and writing.
  5. We have made the class IV employee who didn’t even pass Xth standard to operate the system to accomplish his/her assignments, duties effortlessly and easily.

List the 5 points how can the programme serve as a model that can be replicated or adapted by others?

  1. The software uses open source technologies and solution is least cost solution.
  2. Software has been successfully replicated in most of the Teaching Hospitals in the State of Andhra Pradesh.
  3. The system does not require any prior computer knowledge.
  4. The OS, RDBMS, the Web Server/ Application Server are all free and open source based, so the overheads are minimum.System is modularised, so base on e-readiness suitable modules only can be implemented.
  5. Thus system facilitates implementation in a phased manner as per the convenience of the users

List 5 points to elaborate on the scalability of the programme/project/initiative

  1. Though around 25 nodes are operational at present from various functional locations, such as OP registration counters, Casualty/Emergency, OP Pharmacy, Wards, Investigation Labs, Kitchen & Dietary, Administrative Officers, HR Management, Stores, Library etc. it can be scalable to more number of nodes.
  2. The system is scalable of catering to several hundreds of users because it is based on scalable architecture.
  3. The scalability of the project is maintained by providing high configured hardware , and multiple server replications when needed.
  4. The system is highly scalable from all angles of storage, processing and messaging etc., services.
  5. The system can be implemented in any govt/teaching hospital in Andhra Pradesh with minimum amount of customisation.
